Round Robin

I signed up to be part of a round robin group in my quilt guild. A round robin is where each quilter makes a center square and that square is passed to everyone in the group and they each take a turn adding a border. We have five people in our group so each quilt will have four borders. When you get it back you can add more if you want or finish the top into a quilt as is. I am excited about stretching my creativity as I work on each person's quilt in my group.

Here is my block. I wanted to do something bright with fun colors. The only thing is that I can't decide if I should leave it like this...

Or add a border of the fabric that inspired my color choices...

What do you think? Is the striped border overkill? Which do you think would look better? Remember four other quilters will be adding to it.

Like the border fabric, but I think you should leave it OFF. Let the next quilter decide what to do--maybe some more white would be included and make interesting shapes where it meets your white. Or maybe she will have an idea about the next print.

Do you have instructions for each border? I was in a Round Robin where each border was specified, such as triangles for the first one, applique for the second one, a one-inch plain border for the third, etc. One very interesting one (we had more than four) was to add something WITHOUT increasing the size of the quilt top! [ Or an embellishment.]

Round Robins can be a good challenge to get us thinking in new directions, with colors we might never have picked to use ourselves.

I love the striped border, but... I don't think I would trust it to be used by others.

I like the stripe border. Love the bright colors and your piecing is perfect.

Oh, a gorgeous centre block! And love those bright colours - the other quilters in your group will be happy working on this!

I do love the stripy border, but I agree with Sara, and would leave it off! I think having it on, it sort of signals "finished" and might limit the creativity of the next person... she might see some options you don't at the moment.

Have fun!

I love the border....It ties all the colors together. So there you have it, my two cents!

I love the striped border. If you don't want to do that can you send some of the fabric to the next person so she can use it in some way. That way you'll get the best of both worlds.

What a fabulous block! I like it with and without the border. I know, I'm no help.

I love the colours and the block. I agree with you that the border ties the colours together. If you don't put it on, the next border might take away the effectiveness of your centre block. It is a beauty!

I love the block and border. I think it finishes that block nicely and the next borders will enhance it.

Oh Wow! What an amazing block. How fun. Since you're asking I think (personally) I'd leave the border off. But then again, Only if you're comfortable with that. Ultimately I like to go with my gut on this (too bad I have a bit too much of that - gawd! tmi!!!)

who knew a round robin could be so full of suspense and angst? You thought you were just signing up to do a little quilt didn't you? Oh, the anquish, the fear. Can't wait to see the finished projects!

That's a tough one. I love it both ways, but the border does add a little something. I can't wait to see what comes next, that sounds really fun.

Which guild are you in? I've been thinking about getting in to something like that.

Really love the fabric choices in the block...the border really works. I like the idea of the center block kind of protected by your borders, and then additional borders can be added, you know? Anyway, it will be gorgeous when finished, as it is now!

You've got some beautiful projects here! I love this block. It's really striking. That is going to be one fun round robin quilt! Your 30's quilt in the post below is also really beautiful!
