What a unique binding! I often avoid piping because it's futzy - but this seems really possible! Thanks for sharing!
That is very very similar to how I learned to do all my quilt binding--I never thought of doing an accent piece though.... will have to try that someday.

Wow! This was so helpful! I am excited to try it. I have been quilting for 5 years and always sew my binding down by hand. I love the way it looks but really I never did it by machine because I didn't know how to do it well and was afraid of "ruining" a quilt with a poorly machine sewn binding. Your tutorial was super! It answered a lot of questions on how to make it look really nice. Thank you!
What a great look, sometimes a little extra color is just right on the edge. I especially like the way it gives you a spot to machine stitch on the top.

I saw this on CraftGossip - it looks GREAT!!! It's also a nice solution when you don't have quite enough fabric to do a full folded binding - this can help 'stretch' that while giving you the fun accent!!!

This is awesome! I've never done my binding all by machine but this seems to really be great in that you have an automatic guide to sew down b/c of the faux pipping! I must try this!

Love this idea for faux piping! I have used this method when I would make ruffles for curtains or pillows making them look like there are two ruffles. Smart smart!

This is a great tutorial. So easy to follow and such an easy and quick way to achieve this look. I did a workshop on the same look but it was so much harder and I would say the finished binding wasn't near as fine as yours. Thankyou. You will see the finished quilt when I go to my daughters next as she will send a photo to you.

I'm here to ditto the question in post #44... what does the back look like up close? In some places my seem landed on the binding and looks like patootie...and other places, it landed just a ways off the binding - not sure what it's supposed to look like. I'm debating ripping the whole thing out and trying again. (Thank goodness it's only doll quilt size)...but it'd be helpful to know up close what my end product should sort of look like.

I would love to try this but sure hope you are still answering questions about it first.
(a) If you offset the two colors before you sew them together by what appears to be 1/4" and then them 1/4" from the edge (at least this is what pic looks like) how are you possibly catching the bottom fabric?
(b) I too would like to see pics of the back. Is it fairly easy to line up the two seams (front and back)?

Thanks for the great tutorial. I used this at quilt camp last week to get 5 things bound (3 baby quilts and 2 wall hangings) and had to give about 2 dozen impromptu lessons on the technique. Everyone loved how easy it was to bind their quilts using this method.

I love the look of this, and will have to try it out. Do you take care when sewing the front piping down where your stitches are on the back. I often find that I kind of wander a bit on and off the binding edge on the back.

Did you do your quilting first, before you put in the faux binding, or afterwards? I did mine a little wider than yours and haven't yet done the quilting as it really isn't the binding, it is the border, if you get what I mean. So I will have to quilt it after I add the border.

I love this tutorial! I was wondering where you got the big green polka dot fabric that you used for the Faux Piped Binding. I was also wondering if you followed a pattern for the actual quilt and if so, where I could find that pattern.

A little late to the party, but love this technique. I learned a similar binding from Ricky Timms, but it was more involved and time consuming. This is amazing. Can I share it with my guild? They say the t-shirt quilt I finished using this binding and want me to teach it at our learning night.
I hope they are paying you well for it! Magazines have budgets for content, so ask for more than they originally offer and don't give your intellectual property away for free.

OH NO!!! I was planning on using your piped binding method on the baby quilt I was making and now that the top is done, I came back to your tutorial today to find that it's gone. That is wonderful for you! I used your binding tutorial to complete a quilt earlier this year and LOVED how it looked, so I bookmarked it. I'm not ready to bind another one and came to your blog to use it again and discovered your wonderful news (oh, how I wish I had written down the instructions as I need to do the binding now).
I remember it was sewing 2 strips together and one was wider than the other and you sewed from the back and stitched to the front, but I don't recall the width sizes.
Can you share when this will be published and which magazine??? If it is soon I'll wait to finish my quilt
